Are standardized tests good way to measure student's mastery of course material?

I extremely disagree that standardized tests are good option to evaluate the student’s knowledge of the course material. Are standardized tests fair and helpful evaluation tools? Do tests reflect current knowledge about how students learn? Do multiple-choice or short-answer tests measure important student achievement? Are test scores "reliable"?Test driven, or force-fed, learning can not enrich and promote the traits necessary for life success. John Holt, in his essay “School is bad for children” says that school makes the student less curious and less resourceful. I agree with this point because  before children start their formal education, they are more independent and likely to be creative. The school makes them think in a monotonous way, by instilling the lie that, they should follow the standard steps and the test scores are what really matter. Besides that, John Holt argues that school enforces the idea on students that being wrong is crime and they should only run a

Despicable Impostress

She’s the typical kind of girl you’d see. All drawn out and colorfully coated into the divulging atmosphere and circumstances of real life. She seems on the outside to be a competitive, talented and intelligent girl who can pull off anything bravely but inside, she’s someone else. She knows quite well that she is making others believe what she is not, but it doesn’t seem to bother her at all. Others around her buy her lies too, and get charmed by her little hop, skip and a jump.  She wants to appear dauntless and sophisticated. Her appearance is noteworthy. She ties her hair into pigtails. She’s always dressed-up in feminine colors, like pink, purple or vermilion. She has a funny accent. She snorts loudly when she finds something humorous. She has a pale complexion and handful of freckles on her face. She lets loose of the curls in the front part of her face, hiding the clear vicinity of her face, and the deep blue eyes. The sparkles in her eyes always seem to be dancing a melodious

Completion of 20 years of life - My birthday celebration and reflection to the past

Image
Once again the time to celebrate my birthday is here, November 7th. Candles, cakes, wishes, decorations, and that charm that I sense each time on this very day every year. The smell of different recipies, the CHOCOLATE cake, sweets and all. There is something magnificient, and beautiful, my heart skips a beat, in a moment of delight. I feel excited and enthusiastic throughout the day. The day glows, everything seems to be so perfect. The cool gust of wind, the uncertainty and mysteriousness of life. The warm sunshine and the hope and love that it brings. I notice things that I take for granted. I feel a sense of gratitude for the life I'm living. I always wonder about the human exsistence on Earth, how did we originate? How was our universe created? It's all a mystery. It's fascinating to think about the future that lies ahead. I've grown more curious and more fond to find things out, to research, to learn and to explore the world I live in. I'm still a child-

Techies Guide (DotA 2) by Sristi

Image
This is my first DotA 2 guide, but I have played fair amount of games and have tried different heroes. I've been playing techies a lot since he was introduced into DotA 2 recently. People have that general view thinking that Techies is a useless hero and they try to talk people out of playing it. Techies is a very tricky hero to play, a person who can't play him well will make his team lose the match. The perspective has changed a bit these days because of the videos on YouTube where the best players have played Techies and shown that they can also be as good as any other hero, and sometimes, better than most. Let's talk about cons and pros of playing Techies. Cons: > You can't really participate in ganks with your team, especially in early and mid game. > You will be countered a lot if enemy team has sentry wards or Gem of True Sight. > He has very bad movement speed. > He is squishy with very less hp. > Very hard to farm because of his

Review of "The Heirs", Korean Drama

Image
After watching the whole drama, the final part awed me. I am wonder-struck by the story line and the ending. At first when I watched the first episode, it wasn't that great. Even the following episodes, 2 and 3 are strikingly similar to other previous dramas. The school part seems like a remake of "Boys Over Flowers". I felt like, oh, not again, another drama about high school. This drama is different from the ones I prefer, which have a twist of fantasy in it- the entrance of one soul to another body(Pure Love:49 days), the swapping of spirit between a boy and a girl(Secret Garden), the spirit of a young man in a old man's body(Big), a girl pretending to be a boy(You're Beautiful, Coffee Prince), a group of prehistoric warriors being teleported to modern time(Rooftop Prince). Yet, I enjoyed watching "The Heirs". This drama has a mix of everything, love, hatred, rivalry, pain, and the most important, splashes of humor in between serious parts. It m

How to Ace in any College Course

Image
I probably seem like a nerd writing on this topic. Taking it optimistically, I really am (Nerds rock by the way!). I don’t want to boast but I have done very good performance in my school days, in high school and now at college. When I look back into last 4-5 years, there has been no record of “failed” exams. Things got a little out of handle when I shifted school from Philippines to Nepal. I was a lot weak in Mathematics and Nepali. I was tremendously better at English than my peers though during my school days. Then at high school, I went for the subjects that I loved most. I chose to study English literature, Mass Communication and Sociology. It was during my high school days that I became the best one in every subject I was studying. It mostly has to do with the passion that I had to just come out at the top. I received admiration and compliments from my lecturers, and teachers. Now I’ve just completed my first year course at college. Needles

70 lessons learned after living 20 years of life

Image
Life doesn’t come with a help manual. As we go through different events and moments, we gather varieties of experiences and the lessons we learn from them. A way to learn as much as we can is to try everything possible. We have to be able to take risks and come out of that comfort zone to see the  life as it really is. The time I gave a serious thought to how long I wanted to live was in a program held by W-CARP about two years ago. It was a sisterhood/brotherhood program. The speaker wanted a volunteer and I was quick on my feet to get up. I made my way to the stage flawlessly. The speaker looked at me and asked my name. Then he asked me “How long do you want to live?”.. I gave it some thoughts and I said “90“. The audience seemed amused. Then the next question was why. I said I want to complete my purpose of being born and want to achieve my aim. The next question popped up,"Would you want to have 50,000 people come to mourn at your death like of Ban Ki Moon?”.. I said “Yea

15 reasons why your relationship may fail

Image
Hello there! :) I just wanted to write a funny post about how relationships can be predictable by seeing the nature/behavior of one's partner. It is only for the sake of laughing it off. But this post also sheds some light on bitter reality. I'm writing this from a girl's perspective, hence, the use of "he". The drawings are done by me! <3                 15 reasons why your relationship may fail: 1. Everything moves fast. As soon as you accept that person, he tells you that you are his final choice and he is going to marry you. He says that you are the best person he has ever met and you are so amazing. He makes a checklist of things he wants in a girl. He tells you that you have everything he wants. Very quickly, he makes plans of future. He ponders over the idea of honeymoon and how he wants to have twins. All of this is very alarming because it’s just the start of relationship, and he starts giving you all hopes. Soon, before you know it, h

Does true love exist?

Image
Today I woke up to be shocked by the news that Jordin Sparks and Jason Derulo had split after 3 years of relationship. They were my favorite celebrity couple. I thought they would last a long time. It made me question whether true love was really out there. Sure, every relationship starts very much the same way. The silence is finally broken when one tells that they love the other. It's mostly a boy who says it first. The love bombing phase starts. He does everything to make her fall for him and she finally accepts him. Everything seems to go "perfect". They idealize each other. They get into illusion that "love" is all you need for a relationship to work. That is the foolish assumption where all begins to fall apart. What relationship needs is respect and compatibility. Opposites may attract but only for a while. At first it's amusing to be with a person who is very different from you. Later, the spark of interest fades away when there are arguments an

It's Not What You Look at That Matters, It's What You See

Hey there! I wrote this essay months ago. I'm sure it can be interesting for you all to read it. It covers an interesting topic. Essay: It's Not What You Look at That Matters, It's What You See                        In our lives, we mostly overlook the essence of a thing or situation. When we look at something, it doesn't mean we understand what it really is. To look means, "to merely turn towards or focus your eyes towards an object", while to see means "to perceive or understand". Even when we carefully examine the same thing another person has, we might see something completely different because of our different life experiences. From my understanding, Henry David Thoreau's quote says - Everything in life, there's always a deeper meaning or reasoning. What we look at on the outside cannot be fully interpreted or understood until we see further.                                As an individual, I've noticed many circumstanc
