Techies Guide (DotA 2) by Sristi

This is my first DotA 2 guide, but I have played fair amount of games and have tried different heroes. I've been playing techies a lot since he was introduced into DotA 2 recently. People have that general view thinking that Techies is a useless hero and they try to talk people out of playing it. Techies is a very tricky hero to play, a person who can't play him well will make his team lose the match. The perspective has changed a bit these days because of the videos on YouTube where the best players have played Techies and shown that they can also be as good as any other hero, and sometimes, better than most.

Let's talk about cons and pros of playing Techies.
Cons:
> You can't really participate in ganks with your team, especially in early and mid game.
> You will be countered a lot if enemy team has sentry wards
or Gem of True Sight.
> He has very bad movement speed.
> He is squishy with very less hp.
> Very hard to farm because of his low base damage.
> Controlled units of your enemies can trigger land mines.
> Huge mana dependency.

Pros:
> You can wipe out the whole enemy team in a lane with your remote mines.
> Techie's land mines deal a heavy damage.
> You can ensure first blood always or most of the time.
> Many people are unaware of Techie's skills.
> You can play mind games with the enemy and restrict their access to jungle.
> You can be a very good defender of your base.
> You can blast your remote mines even when you're dead.
> If you are being ganked, you can use your suicide skill.

When you shouldn't pick Techies:
You shouldn't pick techies if there are heroes who can have controlled units, illusions, summons etc.
Phantom Lancer

Nature's Prophet

You shouldn't pick techies when enemies have ability to blink in and out of a position:
Anti Mage

Skill Points:
First you have to max out land mines, and depending on your preference, you can choose suicide or statis trap.

Game play:
As soon as you spawn at the fountain, grab the starting items and teleport to a lane. I will show you the best spot to place land mines for "first blood". If you are on the Radiant Side, you should TP to top lane and place the mines on the spot marked by a red dot:
Map:

Alternately, if you are in the Dire Side, then TP to bottom lane and place the mines on the spot marked by a red dot:

In general, here's a whole map view of "great" places to place your land mines. I've tried all these spots and these have proven to be best.
Map:

Every game will be different and there is no "specific" place to places the mines. It all depends on how the game is going.

Dos and Don'ts:
Do:
> Try to get soul ring, arcane boots and Eul's Scepter of Divinity fast because Techies really benefits from these items for the mana he requires.

> Place mines in different places. If an enemy explodes at rune spot, he'll bring a sentry next time, so place your mines in different unexpected places. It's important not to repeat same mine placement so that you can play mind games more effectively.

> If enemy has gem , then you should tell your allies to gank them and take their gem away or else you'll be playing with a big disadvantage.

> Help to push towers quickly. Your land mines can take down towers easily.

Dont:
> Don't spend your early game mining different places and ignoring to lane for exp. Techies needs to level up fast to 6 so that he can use remote mines. You should be level six by the times its 12 minutes.

> Don't abuse your "suicide" skill. It should NEVER be used to initiate or used whenever you like. Use it only in extreme cases where you are about to die.

>Don't place remote mines too close to your tower, the enemies will use detection.

------
I'll update this guide as I play and find out more efficient gameplay of Techies. I'm still learning! :P
